It was an immensely dark chapter, and one that came very early on. Credit: Amazon StudiosLooking back through the season, and pulling out the moments that hit me, affected me, the most, I'd have to immediately go to "Sunrise." The second episode that featured the attack on Smith's life and the tragic murder of Frank's sister and her children. Joel de la Fuente in The Man in the High Castle. As mentioned, the arrest of Ed felt like it was actually overdue, but I suppose it worked, in the finale, to stop Kido from committing Seppuku - as a way of preventing a war, actually, not because he didn't find the real shooter. Anyhow, the second film, Wegener's confrontation with Hitler, and Tagomi's unexpected journey (will he stay there? was it just a glimpse?) made for an amazing ending. It's almost as if German machinery and Japanese spirituality merged here, with both sides utilizing a form of future-sight to guide them. Connecting his own brand of "seeing" - his ancient oracle belief - into these films and the idea of alternate worlds. As in, "you need to watch me right now." And then there was Tagomi waking up in a completely different reality! An "America won" reality. Also, considering how useful that film was to Juliana and Frank in that very moment, you can also wonder if the films sort of seek out the viewers. It shows you different outcomes, but it can also reveal secrets. Which brings me back to how Hitler could have utilized a film or two to win the war. So, on that level, it was like a cheat sheet. Anyhow, whether or not the film showing the destruction of San Francisco was most definitely the future, it still revealed to Juliana and Frank that Joe was a Nazi. Something I thought might happen to him waaaaay earlier in the season, in fact. Thanks in part also to Ed taking the fall for shooting the Crown Prince.

Though, that's even suspect since the plot to kill Hitler got foiled right at the end and with it the treasonous plot to start a war with Japan.

The second film didn't show what could have been. And what a big leap that was for the series. Credit: Amazon StudiosBut then I got double-fooled because the image wasn't even from the freakin' show's reality. Rupert Evans in The Man in the High Castle. Which was even more of a bummer considering how tough it was for him to make it through "Sunrise" (the second episode) without taking a bullet. It was in Amazon's Man in the High Castle image gallery for press. See the image below? I saw that picture before I watched the episode. The one Juliana and Frank screened at the end of the penultimate Season 1 episode, "Kindness." Here's my story. I mean, it can't just be that Hitler discovered these movies after he won, right? Not after we clearly witnessed one showing us the future annihilation of San Francisco? So let's talk about that second film then. Or some sort of extra aid involving foresight. And also, underneath, perhaps the suggestion that Hitler was able to win the war because he had some sort of extra trickery in his pocket. Seeing him sitting there, watching one of the "forbidden" films. Hey.so.how about meeting Hitler at the end there? Whoa!
